Intake Information

Boulderwood Animal Sanctuary is a small, developing nonprofit sanctuary focused on providing safe, ethical, and intentional care for animals who have nowhere else to go. As we grow and build our infrastructure, our intake capacity is limited and carefully managed to ensure every animal in our care receives proper attention, resources, and long‑term safety.

Current Intake Availability – Sanctuary Animals

At this time, we are able to accept:

  • Small reptiles

  • Small rodents (hamsters, gerbils, hedgehogs, mice, etc.)

🚨 Emergency‑Only Intake (Very Limited)
In true emergency situations only, we may be able to accept:

  • 1 rabbit

  • 1–2 guinea pigs

  •

Emergency intake is evaluated case‑by‑case and depends on space, supplies, and current animal needs.

Wildlife Rehabilitation Intake (Small Mammals – Licensed)

Boulderwood’s wildlife rehabilitation program is conducted by a Rhode Island licensed home wildlife rehabilitator. We provide care for injured or orphaned small mammals with the goal of safely returning them to the wild.

Important:

  • Wildlife intake is by appointment only.

  • Please contact us before bringing any wildlife, including squirrels, chipmunks, or other small mammals.

  • Wildlife outside our licensed scope, or animals requiring immediate veterinary care, may be referred to another permitted facility.

Guidelines for Wildlife Intake:

  1. Keep the animal in a secure, ventilated container and place in a warm, quiet, dark space.

  2. Wear gloves and minimize handling.

  3. Provide details about: species (if known), location found, condition, and care already given.

  4. Do not leave wildlife unattended without prior approval.

Temporary Setups & Animal Care

While our permanent outbuildings are still under construction, animals taken into Boulderwood Animal Sanctuary (or wildlife under care) will be housed in temporary but safe setups.

Every animal in our care will receive:

  • A warm, secure, and clean environment

  • Species‑appropriate food and enrichment

  • Daily care and monitoring

  • Protection from harm, neglect, and unsafe conditions

Temporary does not mean inadequate. Our priority is safety, stability, and humane care while we continue to grow responsibly.

Situations We Accept Animals From

We are open to intake in the following circumstances:

  • Abandonment

  • Abuse or neglect

  • Owner surrender (please contact local shelters and rescues first)

Our mission is to help animals who truly have no other safe options.

Before Contacting Us

If you believe an animal qualifies for intake:

  1. Please check with local shelters and rescues first when applicable

  2. Contact us before bringing any animal

  3. Be prepared to provide details about the animal’s species, condition, and situation

Intake availability may change based on space, resources, and current care demands.

Our Commitment

Boulderwood Animal Sanctuary is being built slowly and intentionally — without shortcuts. Every intake decision, whether for sanctuary animals or wildlife, is made with the animal’s best interest and long-term welfare in mind.

Thank you for respecting our boundaries and supporting ethical, sustainable sanctuary work.

What We Do Not Do

To remain ethical and sustainable, Boulderwood Animal Sanctuary:

  • Does not pull or adopt animals from shelters

  • Cannot accept surprise drop‑offs

  • Cannot accept animals outside our current intake list or outside our licensed wildlife rehab scope

  •

Shelters and rescues play a critical role in animal welfare, and we respect their work. Our focus is on animals in crisis situations that fall outside typical shelter placement.
