Meet Uno: The Unexpected Beginning of Our Sanctuary’s Story

We always knew Boulderwood Animal Sanctuary would begin with a story—just not this soon, and certainly not like this. Uno arrived before the gates were ready, before the systems were polished, and before we felt “prepared.” But animals in need don’t wait for the perfect moment. They come when they need help, and we answer.

Uno—a bearded dragon now safe in our care—was found abandoned in an empty apartment during one of Rhode Island’s coldest stretches of the season. The tenant had moved out four days earlier, leaving him behind with no heat, no food, and no chance of survival on his own. When animal control found him, he was buried under a pile of pillows, desperately trying to hold on to what little warmth he could find.

When the call came in, there wasn’t a second of hesitation. We weren’t planning to take in residents until spring, but saying “yes” was instinct. Uno needed warmth, safety, and medical care immediately—and he needed someone willing to advocate for him.

As soon as he arrived, we began slow, careful warming to protect his fragile body from shock. He was cold to the core, dehydrated, and exhausted. His first hours here were spent wrapped in blankets, close to body heat while we monitored him and prepared the proper setup he had been missing for far too long.

Despite everything, Uno showed signs of fight. His eyes opened. His body relaxed. And little by little, warmth worked its way back into him. He began responding, shifting, and showing the world that he was still here—still trying.

Uno’s story is heartbreaking, but it’s also a powerful reminder of why Boulderwood exists.He is living proof that every life matters, even the small ones. That compassion creates change. And that a sanctuary isn’t built by waiting for the perfect time—it’s built by doing the work when an animal needs you most.

As Uno continues to stabilize, he’ll receive the veterinary care, proper nutrition, heat, and enrichment he has gone without for so long. He will not be cold again. He will not be forgotten again. And he will never be left behind.
